Snares

There have been several reports of badgers caught in snares. Would you know what to do if you came across one?

Here is a quick guide:

If the badger is alive: Do not attempt to cut the snare off. Do not approach or handle the animal.

  • Immediately contact a a trained rescuer, either in your group, a local wildlife hospital or the RSPCA.

  • Rescuers will contain the badger using appropriate equipment. Once it is contained the snare can be cut at the anchor and the badger immediately taken to a vet. The vet will remove the snare from the badger itself under anesthetic.

  • Take a note of the location & take photos of the general area where the snare is.

  • Report the incident to the police & report to Badger Trust.

If the badger is deceased:

  • Do not remove the snare.

  • Take a note of the location and take photos of the badger and the general area where the snare is , as these might be useful for the police.

  • Report it to the police & report to Badger Trust.
