Badger deaths and injuries on the roads

It is this time of year that we see an increase in the number of badgers killed on the roads.

Cubs will be very young still and totally reliant on their mothers for food. As some of the sows venture to feed they unfortunately get killed by trying to cross roads.

A dead lactating sow means there are cubs somewhere underground that are need of help. Without our intervention those cubs will perish.

So what can you do?

Firstly, if you see a dead badger please check that it is really deceased and not injured. Only do this if it is safe for you to do so, don't take risks on busy roads.

If it is dead please report it on the Badger Trust website here: https://www.badgertrust.org.uk/report

Also email us directly here: info@northeasthampshirebadgergroup.com

When we get a report of a dead badger we log it in our database and check to see if we know of a local sett it may have come from. If it was a sow and lactating we will try and find the sett and check for orphans. It is imperative that we act quickly so please report as soon as you can.

If you find an injured or sick badger report it to us as soon as possible. Do not attempt to move the badger yourself. They can inflict serious damage with their teeth and claws.

You can contact us via email as above, or send us a message on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/419203243427694 , leave a post or message us directly.

We have an Emergency Only contact number 07477 559622 this is monitored from 07:00 to 23:00. Please only call this if the badger is injured and needs rescuing.

When reporting either a dead or injured badger please make a note of the location using What3words and take a couple of pictures showing where the badger is, this will help us greatly if we need to come out and rescue.

Hopefully we wont have too many reports to deal with.
